Chung Shan Hoizou Association

Zhongshan (Chung Shan in Cantonese), previously known as Xiangshan, is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong province. The city was the birthplace of revolutionary leader Sun Yat-Sen (or Sun Zhongshan in Mandarin). Upon his death in 1925 the city was renamed to Zhongshan to honour him. For the same reason a large portrait of Sun Yat-sen is hung on the wall of Chung Shan Hoizou Association.
Chung Shan Hoizou Association was founded in 1934. Many of its early members were Ma Jie, a group of women who worked in Singapore as maids. They took the vow of celibacy, just like Mazu, and turned to her for strength and spiritual needs. Among them was Yuan Feng Lian, who served the family of the Kuok Group.
Level 2 of the association building was used as lodging for those who have yet to find a job or those who did not have to a stay-in arrangement with their employers.
The original Mazu statue was invited from Hoizou. The current one was made in Chaozhou, which was consecrated at the end of 20th century.
