Poh Ern Shih

Poh Ern Shih was founded in 1954 by devout Buddhist Lee Choon Seng, whose life was saved by a Buddhist medallion that blocked a bullet from piercing through his chest. He was also the founder of Singapore Buddhist Lodge.
Poh Ern Shih, the Temple of Thanksgiving, was built on Chwee Chian Hill, one of the bloodiest battlefields during the Japanese invasion, where both allied and Japanese troops suffered heavy life losses. The founders wanted to liberate the spirits and so they dedicated the temple to Ksitigarbha (Di Zang Wang), whose primary responsibility is to relieve beings from suffering and lead them to salvation.
Poh Ern Shih was rebuilt in 2003 with eco-friendly features such as solar panels and wind turbines for generating its own power. Another highlight of the new building is the set of sixty Dharma Wheels, which allow devotees to accumulate wisdom and merit as they turn.
